Fox Chapel had been pushed around a bit by teams late in the season, so it wasn’t a huge surprise when North Hills scored a quick goal 2:20 into the game Monday to take an early lead on the Foxes.
That was the only time the Indians found the back of the net.
Fox Chapel (20-0-1) showed why it had the best record in the PIHL this season as it scored five unanswered goals — including a pair from Tommy Healy — while goaltender Nash Wedner made 24 saves as the top-seeded Foxes opened the PIHL Class 1A playoffs with a 5-1 win over No. 8 North Hills (12-9-0) at Alpha Ice.
Other Class 1A
Quaker Valley 5, Moon Area 2: The Quakers opened a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of Luke Flowers goals. But after the Tigers scored two late third period goals to get back within one, they pulled their goaltender and gave up two empty netters.
Class 2A
Thomas Jefferson 7, Hempfield 6 (OT): Nick Stock completed the hat trick and saved the Jaguars season when he beat Spartans goaltender Zack Francisco 20 seconds into overtime to get Thomas Jefferson (18-1-1) into the Penguins Cup semifinals for the fourth consecutive season. Hempfield (9-9-2) opened up a 3-0 first period lead and was up, 6-4, with seven minutes remaining when Jake Stock and Cody Bilski scored Jaguars goals 1:51 apart to tie it.
South Fayette 2, Armstrong 1 (OT): Lions goaltender Brandon Timmins stopped 22 shots and Trevor Dalessandro made it count with the game-winner at 1:48 of overtime.
Class 3A
Seneca Valley 3, Mt. Lebanon 1: The Raiders had lost both regular-season matchups with the Blue Devils, but pulled out the win when it counted most. Jonathan Leishman and Shane Kozlina scored to give Seneca Valley a 2-0 lead.
Pine-Richland 2, Central Catholic 1 (OT): Alex Erlain scored his second of the game on the power play in overtime to give the second-seeded Rams the win. Colin McCarthy sent it to overtime with the Vikings only goal.
